2:8-20 (Y. Ali) Of the people there are some who say: “We believe in Allah and the Last Day;” but they do not (really) believe. Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not! In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves). When it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “Why, we only Want to make peace!” Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not. When it is said to them: “Believe as the others believe:” They say: “Shall we believe as the fools believe?” Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know. When they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe;” but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: “We are really with you: We (were) only jesting.” Allah will throw back their mockery on them, and give them rope in their trespasses; so they will wander like blind ones (To and fro). These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction, Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So they could not see. Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path). Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith! The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (Helps) them, they walk therein, and when the darkness grows on them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things.
4:138 (Y. Ali) To the Hypocrites give the glad tidings that there is for them (but) a grievous penalty;-
4:142-143 (Y. Ali) The Hypocrites – they think they are over-reaching Allah, but He will over- reach them: When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold Allah in remembrance; (They are) distracted in mind even in the midst of it,- being (sincerely) for neither one group nor for another whom Allah leaves straying,- never wilt thou find for him the way.
4:145 (Y. Ali) The Hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire: no helper wilt thou find for them;-
8:49 (Y. Ali) Lo! the hypocrites say, and those in whose hearts is a disease: “These people,- their religion has misled them.” But if any trust in Allah, behold! Allah is Exalted in might, Wise.
9:78 (Y. Ali) Know they not that Allah doth know their secret (thoughts) and their secret counsels, and that Allah knoweth well all things unseen?
24:47 (Y. Ali) They say, “We believe in Allah and in the apostle, and we obey”: but even after that, some of them turn away: they are not (really) Believers.
29:11 (Y. Ali) And Allah most certainly knows those who believe, and as certainly those who are Hypocrites.
33:12 (Y. Ali) And behold! The Hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease (even) say: “(Allah) and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion!”
47:16 (Y. Ali) And among them are men who listen to thee, but in the end, when they go out from thee, they say to those who have received Knowledge, “What is it he said just then?” Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own lusts.
48:6 (Y. Ali) And that He may punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Polytheists men and women, who imagine an evil opinion of Allah. On them is a round of Evil: the Wrath of Allah is on them: He has cursed them and got Hell ready for them: and evil is it for a destination
Abdullah bin ‘Amr narrated that The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up. 1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays. 2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. 3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous. 4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner.” (Bukhari Book 2, Hadith 33)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The signs of a hypocrite are three: When he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is given a trust he breaches it.” (Bukhari)
Yasir Qadhi – Nifaq
The word hypocrisy comes from an Arabic word Nafaqa which means exhaust or spend out. Nafaq means to tunnel an underground passage. (Hans Wehr p.987) Imam Ghazali in the Ihya said that Nifaq came from a word that relates to how a rat looks like it is about to leave from one hole but exits from another. A Munafiq is someone who displays this type of behaviour. In the Mujam Al-Arabi Al-Musir (p.502) it states that a Munafiq is someone who displays faith but hides disbelief or ones outward is different to ones inward.
Cure of the Disease of hypocrisy/nifaq:
1. Make dua and beg Allah to protect you from hypocrisy “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal shak wan-nifaq wal-kufri wa fujoor” – O Allah, I seek refuge in You from doubts, hypocrisy, disbelief and immoral conduct.
2. Devotion is attained when appearance and heart become identical. A person was told: Do everything openly. He said: How? they said to him: Do everything in a way that if people know it, you are not ashamed of it. Do not do in secret anything which if made open, you are ashamed of it. Also avoid deeds which if reminded, its doer denies it.”
7. Increase dhikr – Remember Allah
8. Reflect on how you will feel if this trait of yours is exposed to the world. Disgraced.
9. Reflect on the punishment of the hereafter for hypocrites. A hypocrite will be raised a deformed, ugly creature possessing two tongues of fire and punished along with the hypocrites and devils.
10. Be vigilant, pause, act deliberately against your base desires.
12. Fight Shaytaan
