Good Deed: #192 Persevere

2:286 (Y. Ali) On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) “Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith.”

2:153 (Y. Ali) O ye who believe! seek help with patient perseverance and prayer; for Allah is with those who patiently persevere.

2:155 (Y. Ali) Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere,

2:249 (Y. Ali) When Talut set forth with the armies, he said: “(Allah) will test you at the stream: if any drinks of its water, He goes not with my army: Only those who taste not of it go with me: A mere sip out of the hand is excused.” but they all drank of it, except a few. When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: “This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces.” but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: “How oft, by Allah’s will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere.”

3:186 (Y. Ali) Ye shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and ye shall certainly Hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if ye persevere patiently, and guard against evil,-then that will be a determining factor in all affairs.

3:200 (Y. Ali) O ye who believe! persevere in patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other; and fear Allah. that ye may prosper.

8:46 (Y. Ali) And obey Allah and His Messenger. and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere:

8:66 (Y. Ali) For the present, Allah hath lightened your (task), for He knoweth that there is a weak spot in you: But (even so), if there are a hundred of you, patient and persevering, they will vanquish two hundred, and if a thousand, they will vanquish two thousand, with the leave of Allah. for Allah is with those who patiently persevere.

11:49 (Y. Ali) Such are some of the stories of the unseen, which We have revealed unto thee: before this, neither thou nor thy people knew them. So persevere patiently: for the End is for those who are righteous.

13:22 (Y. Ali) Those who patiently persevere, seeking the countenance of their Lord; Establish regular prayers; spend, out of (the gifts) We have bestowed for their sustenance, secretly and openly; and turn off Evil with good: for such there is the final attainment of the (eternal) home,-

13:24 (Y. Ali) “Peace unto you for that ye persevered in patience! Now how excellent is the final home!”

16:42 (Y. Ali) (They are) those who persevere in patience, and put their trust on their Lord.

16:96 (Y. Ali) What is with you must vanish: what is with Allah will endure. And We will certainly bestow, on those who patiently persevere, their reward according to the best of their actions.

28:80 (Y. Ali) But those who had been granted (true) knowledge said: “Alas for you! The reward of Allah (in the Hereafter) is best for those who believe and work righteousness: but this none shall attain, save those who steadfastly persevere (in good)

30:60 (Y. Ali) So patiently persevere: for verily the promise of Allah is true: nor let those shake thy firmness, who have (themselves) no certainty of faith

31:31 (Y. Ali) Seest thou not that the ships sail through the ocean by the Grace of Allah.- that He may show you of His Signs? Verily in this are Signs for all who constantly persevere and give thanks

39:10 (Y. Ali) Say: “O ye my servants who believe! Fear your Lord, good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world. Spacious is Allah’s earth! those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure!”

40:55 (Y. Ali) Patiently, then, persevere: for the Promise of Allah is true: and ask forgiveness for thy fault, and celebrate the Praises of thy Lord in the evening and in the morning

46:35 (Y. Ali) Therefore patiently persevere, as did (all) apostles of inflexible purpose; and be in no haste about the (Unbelievers). On the Day that they see the (Punishment) promised them, (it will be) as if they had not tarried more than an hour in a single day. (Thine but) to proclaim the Message: but shall any be destroyed except those who transgress?

47:31 (Y. Ali) And We shall try you until We test those among you who strive their utmost and persevere in patience; and We shall try your reported (mettle).

Abu Umamah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that Allah, who is Blessed and Exalted, said “Son of Adam, if you show endurance and seek your reward from me in the first affliction, I shall be pleased with no lesser reward than Paradise for you.” (Tirmidhi Hadith 1758)

“Abu Umayyah ash-Sha’bani said: I asked Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani: What is your opinion about the verse “Care for yourselves”.  He said: I swear by Allah, I asked the one who was well informed about it; I asked the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) about it.  He said: No, enjoin one another to do what is good and forbid one another to do what is evil.  But when you see niggardliness being obeyed, passion being followed, worldly interests being preferred, everyone being charmed with his opinion, then care for yourself, and leave alone what people in general are doing; for ahead of you are days which will require endurance, in which showing endurance will be like grasping live coals. The one who acts rightly during that period will have the reward of fifty men who act as he does. He said (The hearers asked:) Apostle of Allah, the reward of fifty of them? He replied: The reward of fifty of you.” (Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4327)

Action Plan

Perseverance means “not giving up” or “hanging in there until you complete the task you started.” When your child sticks to a task, point it out: “There’s perseverance for you. You hung in there with your work even though it was hard.”

1.Open mind: Having an open mind basically from my own experience means the less need to be quick to judge or jump to conclusions. It’s a person’s ability to hear and understand others even if you totally or do not agree nor accept what they are saying or doing. This is a way of opening yourselves to new experiences where you can tap into new ideas subsequently learn and move forward.

2.Focus and Purpose :Keep pushing on; that is look ahead , focus and always have a purpose. It is a good motivating factor.

3.Motivation: Defining a purpose should drive your motivation. “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful ~ Mark Victor Hansen.

4. Positivity: Surround yourself with positive people those who will support, encourage and inspire you throughout the whole process. “Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant, they is a fuel in us which needs to be ignited with sparks”~Johann Gottfried Von Herder.

5. Responsibility: it is easy to avoid perseverance if you blame everyone and everything around you. So explore different ways to take responsibility for your own actions. In my view responsibility equals growth and maturity. “When you blame others, you give up your power to change ~Author Unknown.

6.Patience: we cannot talk about perseverance and not mention the word endurance which indirectly means we sometimes need to be patience . “Patience is waiting. Not passively waiting. That is laziness. But to keep going when the going is hard and slow – that is patience”~Thinkexist

7.Hopeful: we need to be hopeful for perseverance to work. Once you set your mind to the task or whatever you hope to accomplish you must achieve it because you can! “Don’t be discouraged. It’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock”. ~Author Unknown.

8.Be dynamic:  know when to review what you are driving towards and make changes along the way as needed.

9. Spirituality: If you do pray or meditate please integrate this into your life /plan.  People who persevere in situations generally feel more confident, happier and are able to talk from experience;
